It is impressive to see what governments can do when it becomes a public health emergency to do so. For example, we’ve been struggling with the growing number of unhoused people for, oh about forever, and the response has been slow given the growth.
But now, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors has quickly approved emergency housing in the form of leasing two hotels in Oakland. From East Bay Citizen:
The proposed lease agreements on Tuesday’s Alameda County Board of Supervisors agenda call for the county to use the Comfort Inn & Suites and the Radisson Hotel Oakland Airport, both on Edes Avenue, and near the Oakland Coliseum, to temporarily house the homeless during the crisis.
Under the proposed agreement, the county would take possession of the hotels through April 30, and potentially on a day-by-day basis afterwards, if the shelter in place remains.
The initial costs for the county will be steep. The 289-room Radisson Hotel Oakland Airport will cost $2.4 million to lease from Mar. 16 through the end of April, according to a county staff report. If the hotel space is still needed, the rate becomes $53,744 a day.
The 109-room Comfort Inn & Suites will be leased to the county for $870,480 during the same time frame, and $19,344 a day thereafter, according to a county staff report.
The day rate seems a little expensive given that the hotels won’t be staffed to leisure/business guest levels. All hotels in the area seems to be around the $84 – 100 range according to TripAdvisor. But if this can be done for an extended period of time along with supportive services to help transition some of these folks out of homelessness, it might be a good investment in the long term.
